ADDIS ABABA/Ethiopia: In a spirit of profound gratitude and apostolic vision, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) officially blessed the “Selam” Residential Village on January 22, 2026. Located in the Summit area of the Addis Ababa Archdiocese, this eight-story complex stands as a testament to the Gospel values of stewardship, solidarity, and the dignity of those called to serve the Lord.

The completion of this project, which has been in development for seven years, marks a strategic shift toward sustainability within the Ethiopian Church. As the building reaches 85% completion, it serves as a physical manifestation of the biblical principle found in Galatians 6:10: "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."

The complex features 39 residential units, commercial shops, meeting halls, and parking facilities. Abune Markos, Bishop of Jimma-Bonga and Vice President of the CBCE, described the occasion as a "great vision for the future of the Church."

The primary goal of "Selam" Village is to provide for the fundamental needs of Diocesan priests. This initiative reflects the Gospel mandate to care for those who labor in the vineyard of the Lord.

"This institution is a place where true apostolic support and brotherhood are witnessed," stated Abune Markos. "By helping to meet the basic needs of the priests who serve Catholics everywhere, it uniquely strengthens our Gospel ministry."

This sentiment was echoed by Abba Fiseha Tafesse, President of the Association of Ethiopian Priests of Our Lady. He emphasized that the project is not merely about bricks and mortar, but about enhancing the "social well-being and fraternity" of the clergy, ensuring they can focus on their spiritual mission without the burden of material insecurity.

The project is a fruit of international cooperation, echoing the unity of the Universal Church. It was made possible through the partnership of:

• The Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart (German Catholic Church)

• The legacy and support of Pope Francis

• The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia

Abba Ketema, Secretary General of the CBCE, expressed deep gratitude to these partners, noting that the multi-purpose nature of the building will ensure the Church's mission remains sustainable for years to come.

The blessing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Apostolic Nuncio to Ethiopia, the Bishops of Ethiopia, and representatives from the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Their presence underscored the communal bond of the Church, reminding the faithful of Psalm 133:1: "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"

As the "Selam" Village opens its doors, it stands as a beacon of hope—an "apostolic vision" that ensures the messengers of the Gospel are supported as they, in turn, support the people of God.
