BAHIR DAR, Ethiopia – In a vibrant display of faith and resilience, the Catholic Diocese of Bahir Dar-Dessie celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday, February 1, 2026 (Tahsas 24, 2018 E.C.). The milestone event served as both a reflection on a decade of growth and a powerful call for ecumenical solidarity amidst regional challenges.
His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Souraphiel, who presided over the liturgical celebrations, commended the faithful for their unwavering spirit. Acknowledging that the Diocese has navigated significant periods of conflict and instability, the Cardinal emphasized that the fruits of their persistent prayers are becoming visible.

"Even while the Eparchy exists within conflict and a lack of peace, your strength in prayer has borne fruit," Cardinal Berhaneyesus stated. He urged the congregation to remain diligent in their spiritual lives and emphasized their unique mission: "You have received the mission to live in unity with followers of different faiths in your area and to witness the Gospel together."
His Eminence also extended heartfelt thanks to the priests, religious sisters, and laity who remained with the people during their darkest hours.
The Bishop of the Eparchy of Bahir Dar-Dessie, Abune Lisane-Christos, provided a poignant reflection on the Diocese’s journey since its inception. He noted that the young Diocese was tested early on first by the global COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently by local conflicts within the region.

Despite these hurdles, Abune Lisane-Christos highlighted that the Church’s mission never wavered in pastoral work and the sacraments continued uninterrupted despite the unrest. The Diocese remained on providing essential support to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The anniversary was not only a look back at the past but also a commitment to the future of the Catholic Church in northern Ethiopia. The day featured two major milestones for the local infrastructure: Educational Expansion: The inauguration of the Blessed Gebremichael Secondary School expansion building. And a Spiritual Landmark which is the laying of the foundation stone for a new Cathedral, symbolizing the permanent and growing presence of the Catholic community in the region.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking dignitaries, including the Apostolic Nuncio to Ethiopia H.E. Archbishop Brian Ngozi Udaigwe, along with various Bishops, religious leaders and government representatives.
The ceremony concluded with expressions of gratitude to various international and local partners whose support has sustained the Eparchy’s developmental and pastoral initiatives over the last ten years.
