JIMMA-BONGA, Ethiopia – In a powerful display of faith and national solidarity, the Apostolic Vicariate of Jimma-Bonga celebrated the 8th annual memorial of the Modi’o Catholic Martyrs this week. The event, which drew hundreds of faithful for a spiritual pilgrimage, was centered on the Gospel values of love, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace for Ethiopia.

His Excellency Abune Markos Ghebremedhin, Vicar Apostolic of Jimma-Bonga, led the liturgical celebrations. During his homily, he reminded the congregation that the Modi’o Martyrs endured extreme suffering and persecution specifically because of their unwavering commitment to their Catholic faith. Abune Markos emphasized that the historical sacrifice of the martyrs is a testament to spiritual resilience. He urged today's Christians to emulate this "fortitude of faith" by performing good deeds and overcoming the various worldly challenges they face in their daily lives.

"To honor the memory of the Modi’o Martyrs is to live out the Gospel in action," Abune Markos stated. "We must ensure that their history is remembered not just through words, but through our consistent commitment to service and kindness."

The Bishop further highlighted that the Catholic Church continues to manifest its teachings through humanitarian service, providing essential support to all people regardless of their background, as a practical reflection of Christian love.

The two-day celebration was marked by deep-rooted Catholic traditions, including the Pilgrimage of the Blessed Sacrament, a solemn procession honoring the real presence of Christ. Candle-Lighting Ceremony: Symbolizing the light of Christ that the martyrs carried even in the face of death. The Liturgy of the Word detailed teachings on the lives of the martyrs to inspire the new generation.

In a timely message for the country, Abune Markos underscored that the true essence of commemorating martyrs lies in fostering unity. He made a passionate plea for all Christians to: Respect one another across different communities. Love their neighbors unconditionally. And Stand together as a vanguard for national peace and stability.

By framing the martyrs' sacrifice as a catalyst for reconciliation, the Vicariate aims to turn a history of persecution into a future of hope and brotherhood.
